It’s the day for our big date, but all the restaurants and pubs are closed. So we went down to the park for fish and chips, discussed working from home, and pondered the dramatic changes in our priorities.

Bruce:

This is a little beach on Sydney Harbour, not far from where we live. This music licensing episode was filmed on the 18th of March when the lockdown was just starting. It’s much more severe now. We’re posting this on the 30th and there’s a lot more restrictions. This was just the beginning of the work from home period where the music companies and the advertising agencies were all starting to shift home. But here’s Clare. Let’s hear about the day in the lockdown. We do come down here occasionally for music supervision business meetings once in a blue moon, but we are here for a different reason today. Why are we here, Clare?

Clare:

It’s our third wedding anniversary.

Bruce:

Three long years of being married. It’s wonderful.

Clare:

Yes, it’s wonderful.

Bruce:

That’s three years ago today, we got married. You’ve been married before?

Clare:

Not telling.

Bruce:

Not telling. She has. We’ve both been married twice before and we did it again. Third time lucky. Three years ago today exactly, what was the thing we were most worried about?

Clare:

The weather. It had rained for six weeks nonstop.

Bruce:

Anyway, it stopped just in time for the dazzling bride to walk down the steps.

Clare:

Yeah. It stopped while we had the celebration and then just as everybody was leaving, it bucketed down again. So we were very lucky.

Bruce:

But it wasn’t our intention to be here today. This is our wedding anniversary date, fish and chips, lunch, and a burger down at the kiosk. We were going to do something else, but the coronavirus intervened, and like a lot of things, now we can’t do that so we are making do with what we’ve got. And of course, the point is that that particular day on our wedding, the main thing we were worried about was the weather. That now pales into insignificance compared with all the problems with the virus and the lockdown.

Now on a more serious note, I wanted to talk a bit about working on music licensing from home. We are working from home. I’ve been talking to a lot of our music suppliers and clients and suddenly, everybody is working from home. It hasn’t really affected us much because we’ve been working as music supervisors from home, or I have, for 20 years and Clare for the last couple of years, so we’re completely geared up for it. We have, on occasion, discussed the idea of having an office, but in 20 years, nobody’s ever wanted to come and see us. Everything we do is via email and phone calls, so it doesn’t make much difference to us. But we are seeing a bit of disruption because people aren’t used to it. They’re struggling with a few things.

Clare:

It’s not set up. The internet and that kind of thing’s not set up properly.

Bruce:

Internet and people not being able to get access to their servers efficiently. We’re seeing a transition period. I guess within a few weeks, it’ll all be okay and people will be settled down. But I’d say, my prediction is that everybody’s been told to work from home for a few weeks, but I think it’s going to go on for quite a lot of months. So we all need to get used to it, I guess. Anyway, if you are going through all that, best of luck. We hope it all works out for you and we hope that if you’re in advertising or music, that all the businesses survive and we keep going.
